Leprechaun is one of those classic horror movies that is so bad it's good. The plot is insane, the acting is over-the-top, and the special effects are laughably bad. The basic premise of every Leprechaun film is this:
After visiting his homeland Ireland in 1983, Dan O'Grady returns to North Dakota. O'Grady learns after burying the riches that the leprechaun murdered his wife. O'Grady uses a four-leaf clover to trap the leprechaun. He's dead before he can burn him.
After ten years have passed, J. D. Redding decides to spend the summer at the O'Grady farmhouse with his daughter Tory, who is now a teenager. The farmhouse is now being repainted with the aid of contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their friend Ozzie Jones, who is considered to be somewhat dimwitted. While Ozzie is scouring the basement, he overhears the leprechaun calling for help and mistakes him for a little child. He frees the leprechaun from the carton by removing the worn out four-leaf clover that was inside of it. Ozzie learns from the leprechaun that he is really an Irish shoemaker who emigrated to the United States in the hope of making his fortune. Ozzie notices a rainbow after his attempts to convince the others that he had seen a leprechaun were unsuccessful. He decides to follow the rainbow in the hopes of finding upon a treasure chest along the way. Alex follows him because he is worried that Ozzie would hurt himself in some way. A bag holding one hundred gold coins mysteriously materializes in front of Ozzie. After Ozzie examines the gold and mistakenly consumes a coin while doing so, they conceal it in an old well in the belief that this would restore Ozzie's mental capacity.
The farm leprechaun fools J. D. by pretending to be a cat and biting his hand. Tory and the others transport the leprechaun to the hospital. Alex and Ozzie visit a pawn shop to inspect the gold's purity. The leprechaun kills the owner, Joe, for stealing his gold and polishes his shoes before departing. On his way home, the leprechaun constructs a go-kart and gets caught for speeding. Leprechaun chases policeman into woods and murders him. The leprechaun returns to the farmhouse and shines every shoe he sees. After dumping off J. D., the group returns to the farm. Nathan is injured by a leprechaun-set bear trap after discovering the house ransacked. The gang beats the leprechaun with rocks and clubs outside.
The leprechaun is shot many times when they discover a firearm in the home. When it doesn't work, they try to leave the property, but the leprechaun has destroyed the truck's engine. The leprechaun terrorizes the gang after smashing the vehicle with the go-kart until Ozzie admits that he and Alex discovered the pot of gold. The bag is retrieved from the well by Tory, who then offers it to the leprechaun. They go to the hospital, certain that the worst is past. The leprechaun realizes that he is missing the last coin that Ozzie ate as he counts his wealth. He threatens them, believing they have duped him, until Ozzie informs them that O'Grady had a stroke and was sent to a nursing facility. The farm's late caretaker, O'Grady, forewarns the young woman that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, of which there happens to be a plentiful patch just outside the farm's gates. Tory returns to the farm in search of a four-leafed clover, but the leprechaun assaults her there, forcing Nathan and Ozzie to come to her rescue. When the leprechaun returns to get the remaining gold coin, he is badly injured by Ozzie, who admits eating it. Before the leprechaun can kill Ozzie, Alex takes a four-leaf clover that Tory found, sticks it to a piece of gum, and launches it into the leprechaun's mouth. The leprechaun's skeleton, after tumbling into the well, emerges and demands, "I want my gold." Nathan uses gasoline to set fire to both items after returning the leprechaun to the well. Tory and her father are reconciled, she marries Nathan, and the two have a child when the police arrive. After the producers requested that the picture be made bloodier to appeal to adult viewers, some sequences had to be reshot.
It is well knowledge that George Lucas was involved in the selection of Warwick Davis for the role of Willow. The explanation behind this, however, is not as well recognized. It would seem that Davis was bound by a contract with Lucas, and Lucas was required to grant his OK before Davis could feature in the film. As a consequence of this, he was recognized at the very end of the movie with a "special thanks" credit. Fans of horror films will find that the movie is much more intriguing when they learn this little-known truth. It's simply another illustration of how much of an impact George Lucas has had on popular culture.
The leprechaun was supposed to run away to Ireland at first. But there was one problem: Warwick Davis, an Irish actor who played the leprechaun, did not have a work visa. In order to film the last scene, Davis had to get a visa in just three days, which is usually impossible. The office of Vice President Dan Quayle was able to speed up the process, which allowed Davis to finish filming on time.
